Melina Recio was named the secondary teacher of the year for McAllen ISD. As a highschool student, Melina was named most likely to succeed and later, after college, became a highschool english teacher. Her career choice was greeted with unsettling reactions from family and friends. Melina talks about how society views the teaching profession and how the words we choose to use about the profession matter. Melina Recio is a passionate educator known for inspiring students to become change agents in their communities, she is a high school teacher in McAllen, TX. Melina has the great privilege of pursuing a passion while working relentlessly towards educational equity and elevating the teaching profession. She was also named 2019 Secondary Teacher of the Year for McAllen ISD This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
